Meta ads for a UK Shopify store. The set-up before the spend.

Tracking, consent, catalogue and the first campaign structure that gives Meta something to learn from.

Most Meta accounts that lose money for a Shopify store were not badly targeted. They were badly measured. Meta optimises towards the events it receives, so if purchases are missing or duplicated, the system learns from the wrong signal. Fix the plumbing before spending.

1. Pixel and Conversions API, deduplicated

The Shopify Facebook & Instagram app installs the Pixel and the Conversions API together. Check in Events Manager that each purchase arrives once from the browser and once from the server, with the same event ID, and that Meta reports them as deduplicated. Event match quality for Purchase should be high, because Shopify sends hashed email, phone and address after the order.

If you use a custom theme, a headless storefront or a separate consent tool, test a real order and watch the events appear. Do not assume.

2. Consent that the Pixel respects

In the UK the Pixel counts as a non-essential tracking technology under PECR, so it should fire only after the visitor accepts marketing cookies. Shopify’s customer privacy settings or your consent platform should block it before consent. Expect to lose a share of events; the Conversions API with proper deduplication limits the damage. Do not “fix” the gap by firing everything regardless of consent.

3. A catalogue Meta can use

  • Prices in GBP including VAT, matching the product page.
  • Availability synchronised for every variant.
  • Clean titles: product, brand, key attribute. No capitals, no promotional text.
  • Images that work in a square crop, without text overlays.
  • Product sets that mirror your margin groups, not only your collections.

4. A structure the algorithm can learn from

Meta’s learning phase wants roughly 50 optimisation events per ad set per week. For a store with a £40 average order and a 2% conversion rate, that is far more spend than most new accounts have. Start simple:

  1. One campaign, one ad set, broad targeting in the UK, Advantage+ placements, optimised for Purchase.
  2. Three to five creatives: a product demo video, a customer quote, a before and after, a plain product shot with price, an offer.
  3. A catalogue ad in the same ad set once the Pixel has 100 purchases.

Split by audience only when you have a reason that the numbers support. Prospecting and retargeting in one ad set is normal at small budgets; separate them when retargeting spend exceeds a fifth of the total.

5. The numbers that decide

Judge the account on contribution after ad spend, new-customer share and the store’s own order count, not on Meta’s reported ROAS alone. Meta claims orders within its attribution window that other channels also claim. Set a weekly check: Meta spend, Shopify orders, blended cost per order, and whether the week’s cash position allows the next step up.

Platform features and requirements change. Check the current Google and Meta help pages for your account before relying on a specific setting. Nothing here is legal advice; confirm consent and tax treatment with your own advisers.

Questions owners ask

Do I need the Conversions API as well as the Meta Pixel?

Yes for most stores. Browser blocking and consent choices mean the pixel alone misses purchases. Sending the same events from the server with a shared event ID lets Meta deduplicate them and keeps optimisation data more complete.

How much should a UK Shopify store spend on Meta ads to start?

Enough for the campaign to reach around 50 purchases a week per ad set, which is what the learning phase needs. If your average order value and conversion rate make that unrealistic, optimise for add to cart or initiate checkout first, then move to purchase.

Do I need cookie consent for the Meta Pixel in the UK?

Yes. The Pixel is a non-essential tracking technology under PECR, so it should load only after the visitor accepts marketing cookies. Set it up through a consent banner and Consent Mode or your tag manager’s consent triggers.
