Scaling an advertising account on broken tracking is like driving faster with a fogged windscreen. Every bidding system you use is making decisions on the events you send it. Before increasing any budget, work through this list once and then after every theme change, app install or checkout update.
A. One source of truth
- The store ledger (Shopify, WooCommerce) is the reference for order count and net revenue.
- Decide whether conversion values exclude VAT and shipping. Apply the same rule in every platform.
- Record the rule in a shared document so that nobody changes it quietly.
B. Consent first
- A consent banner that blocks advertising and analytics tags until the visitor accepts.
- Consent Mode v2 configured with the four signals, including ad_user_data and ad_personalization, which Google requires for personalised ads to UK and EEA users.
- Test in a fresh browser: reject, and confirm no advertising cookies are set; accept, and confirm the tags fire.
C. Google
- GA4 purchase event with transaction ID, value, currency and items, firing once per order. Check the thank-you page on reload: the event must not fire twice.
- Google Ads conversion action for purchase, imported from GA4 or tagged directly. If both exist, only one is set as primary for bidding.
- Enhanced conversions enabled, sending hashed email and phone where consent allows.
- Merchant Center conversion tracking consistent with Google Ads so that Shopping reports match.
D. Meta
- Pixel and Conversions API sending Purchase with the same event ID, deduplicated in Events Manager.
- Event match quality checked for Purchase and Add to Cart.
- Domain verified and the key events configured in the account.
E. Reconcile monthly
Compare orders in the store, GA4 purchases, Google Ads conversions and Meta purchases for the same month. Expect GA4 to be a little below the store because of consent rejections and blocked tags. Expect ad platforms to sum to more than the store because each claims the order under its own window. Large gaps in either direction point to duplicates, missing tags or a consent set-up that is blocking more than it should.
F. Protect it
- One tag manager container, with version notes for every change.
- A test order after every theme, app or checkout change.
- An automated alert when daily purchase events drop sharply against orders.
Tracking is never finished, but it can be dependable. Dependable is what lets you raise budgets with confidence.
Platform features and requirements change. Check the current Google and Meta help pages for your account before relying on a specific setting. Nothing here is legal advice; confirm consent and tax treatment with your own advisers.
Questions owners ask
Should I track purchases through GA4 or Google Ads?
Both, but choose one as the source of truth for bidding. A Google Ads conversion tag with enhanced conversions gives the bidding system the fastest, richest signal; GA4 is better for analysis across channels. Keep the values and currencies consistent.
What is Consent Mode and do I need it?
Consent Mode tells Google tags what the visitor agreed to. Since 2024 the ad_user_data and ad_personalization signals are required for personalised advertising to UK and EEA users. Without them, audience lists and some measurement stop working.
Why does my store show fewer purchases than Google Ads?
Attribution windows, view-through conversions and duplicate tags inflate the ad platform number; blocked tags and consent rejections deflate it. Reconcile to the store ledger monthly and fix duplicates before changing bids.
