The mechanism, without the mystery
Google Shopping applies a margin before a merchant’s bid enters the auction. An alternative CSS has its own charging model. Here is a simplified example assuming a 20% margin, not a promise of the CPC you will pay.
Google Shopping · illustrative bid
£1.00With an assumed 20% margin, £0.80 reaches the auction.
Alternative CSS · equivalent auction bid
£0.80£0.80 reaches the auction before any CSS fees. An illustrative 20% lower input.
The auction determines the actual click price. Compare the full arrangement, including CSS fees, before judging the benefit. This is not a refund from Google and does not apply to every ad format.
